Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Broker Services

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans offer a great way to get predictable healthcare costs by filling the gaps left by Original Medicare. But with multiple plan letters and dozens of insurance companies offering them, how do you choose the right one at the best price? That’s where I come in. I’m Andy Stroman, founder of Stroman Insurance Services, and I provide expert guidance and comparison services to help you find and enroll in the Medigap plan that best fits your needs and budget – at no direct cost to you.

How I Help You Compare Medigap Plans & Carriers

My primary goal is to simplify your Medigap decision process:

Comparing Key Plans (like G & N)

While benefits for each Medigap plan letter (e.g., Plan G, Plan N) are standardized by the government, I help you clearly understand the subtle but important coverage differences between the most popular options so you can choose the level of coverage you’re comfortable with.

Comparing Premiums Across Companies

The biggest variable in Medigap is the monthly premium, which can differ significantly between insurance companies for the exact same letter plan. I shop the rates for you, comparing quotes from numerous highly-rated carriers available in your state (Georgia and nationwide).

Checking Enrollment Eligibility

I help you determine your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or if you qualify for Guaranteed Issue Rights to ensure you can enroll smoothly and potentially avoid medical underwriting.

Ensuring Your Medigap Choice Fits Your Needs & Budget

Finding the right Medigap plan involves more than just picking the cheapest premium:

Guidance on Plan Selection

Based on our consultation about your budget, health needs, and risk tolerance, I offer personalized guidance on whether a plan like G (more coverage, higher premium) or N (lower premium, some copays) might be more suitable for you.

Considering Carrier Reputation

While benefits are standardized, I can provide objective information on factors like carrier financial stability (A.M. Best ratings) and historical rate increase trends to help inform your decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the most common Medigap questions I get from prospective clients:

It varies, but I tell everyone to estimate $120 to $200 per month. Cost factors include the plan letter you choose (Plan G typically costs more than Plan N), the specific insurance company offering the plan, your location (zip code), age, gender, and sometimes tobacco use. Enrolling during your initial 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period usually guarantees the best rate without health questions. My service includes running personalized quotes from multiple highly-rated carriers available in your state (Georgia and others) so you can compare the actual premiums side-by-side. Using my assistance to compare and enroll costs you nothing extra – the premium is set by the insurance company.

The biggest potential problem is applying outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a Guaranteed Issue Right period. If you don’t have these protections, insurance companies can deny your application or charge significantly higher premiums based on your health history (medical underwriting). Another consideration is that Medigap plans typically experience annual rate increases, which can vary by company. Also, Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage (Part D) – you’ll need a separate plan for that. They also generally don’t cover routine dental, vision, or hearing care. I help you understand your specific enrollment rights to avoid underwriting issues and can discuss carrier rate stability history as part of our comparison.

Plan G and Plan N are currently the most popular options for people new to Medicare. Both offer excellent coverage for the major gaps in Original Medicare. The main difference: Plan G covers all gaps except the annual Part B deductible (once you pay that, your Medicare-covered costs are typically $0 for the rest of the year). Plan N has slightly less coverage – you pay small copays for some doctor visits (up to $20) and ER visits (up to $50, if not admitted), and it doesn’t cover rare Part B “excess charges.” Because of these small cost-sharing differences, Plan N usually has a lower monthly premium than Plan G. I can explain these differences in detail and help you weigh the premium savings of Plan N against the more comprehensive coverage of Plan G based on your preferences.

The most popular Medigap companies among my clients are Humana, Aetna, Mutual of Omaha, UnitedHealthcare, and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. With that said, neither of them are clearly better than the others in a general sense.

Since plan benefits are standardized by letter, the “best” company often comes down to finding one that offers a competitive premium for your specific area and demographic, has strong financial stability (like a high A.M. Best rating), and has a reasonable history of rate increases. There isn’t a single “best” Medigap plan letter or insurance company that fits everyone. The “best” plan for you depends on your personal budget, how much risk you’re comfortable with (e.g., paying small copays with Plan N vs. higher premium for Plan G), and your expected healthcare usage. My role as your independent broker is to help you objectively evaluate these factors across multiple carriers to find the plan and company that provides the best overall value for your situation.

You can check insurance company financial strength ratings through independent agencies like A.M. Best (ambest.com). Your state’s Department of Insurance website might also offer resources like complaint data. Since Medigap benefits are standardized by letter, most “reviews” you find online often relate more to an insurance company’s customer service or billing rather than the plan coverage itself. Be cautious with anecdotal reviews. During our consultation, I can share objective information about carrier reputations and stability.

Changing Medigap plans after your initial 6-month Open Enrollment Period can be difficult because insurance companies can usually require medical underwriting (asking health questions and potentially denying coverage or charging more based on your health). However, there are important exceptions called Guaranteed Issue Rights that occur due to specific situations (like losing employer coverage after 65, your Medicare Advantage plan changing significantly, etc.). These give you a limited time window to switch to certain Medigap plans without underwriting. My service includes helping you understand if you currently have a Guaranteed Issue Right to change plans. If not, I can explain the medical underwriting process if you still wish to apply for a different plan. We also review your plan annually to ensure it still meets your needs, even if switching isn’t always easy.
